Richard reflects on Mexico 86 as a story of ambition, resilience and determination. The film follows Mexico's unlikely journey to hosting the 1986 World Cup after Colombia withdrew, highlighting the persistence, creativity and, at times, questionable tactics used to secure the bid over the United States. The story becomes even more compelling after the devastating 1985 Mexico City earthquake, when the country rallied together and convinced FIFA it could still host the tournament. For Richard, the film is ultimately a powerful reminder of how belief, resourcefulness and national pride can overcome seemingly impossible odds. While the central character is deeply flawed, his conviction in Mexico's potential and the country's collective resilience make it a memorable underdog story.
